With the new “Experience Centre Averbodia” being under construction, the Abbey of Averbode took the time to go looking for a nutritious and healthy sweet
food to complement its existing basket of abbey products : bread, cheese and beer. The choice fell on an artisanal honey cake, a tasty soft gingerbread with walnuts which pairs beautifully with the current abbey
Gingerbread: a long living tradition
Gingerbread is the new flavour of Averbode Abbey. This is not surprising, since this specialty has traditionally always been on the menu in refectories. In the Middle Ages
pilgrims brought spiced cakes from the East and the monasteries were the first to get to work with them. After all, they had all the ingredients within hands to bake gingerbread: grains, honey, spices. The foundation of a centuries-old
tradition was laid.
