A moment of harmony

Ever since its foundation in 1134, the Averbode Abbey – situated on the borders of the Kempen and Hageland – has been a crossroads of worlds. For centuries on end the abbey has been connecting spiritual life with an engagement focussed on the broader society. Even today it remains a place of silence and reflection for many people. The abbey community embraces values such as authenticity and harmony and has a long tradition of sustainable production of food and drinks. The abbey housed a bakery, cheese dairy and brewery for many centuries. And up until today the abbey’s dairy farm contributes to sustainable agriculture.

The abbey community has decided to let history revive with the launch of a basket of qualitative products: bread, gingerbread, cheese and beer. The sales revenues will be used for philanthropic projects, educational publications with a social added value and heritage projects in Averbode. The abbey wishes that the brand name Averbode Abbey stands for tasteful, traditional and healthy products and therefore has carefully selected the partner companies La Lorraine Bakery Group, Milcobel and Brewery Huyghe. Just like the abbey, these companies hold sustainability and authenticity in high esteem. Inspired and chastened by a long abbey tradition the basket with food and drinks brings people together to enjoy a unique taste experience and to live a moment of harmony.

02. The bread
02. The bread

In its desire to be self-sufficient the Abbey has had an own farm, brewery, cheese dairy and a bakery for centuries on end. Bread was and still is an essential element in the daily menu of the abbey community. Hence, it does not come as a surprise that bread is also part of the basket of qualitative products the Abbey is launching.

The norbertine community of Abbey Averbode very consciously chose La Lorraine Bakery Group as their partner to make Averbode bread. Just like the Abbey, La Lorraine Bakery Group holds authenticity and tradition in high esteem. Respect for these values and for nature are key elements throughout the production process of this tasteful bread.

The wholegrain Averbode brood combines the best that nature has to offer with true craftsmanship and the passion of the baker. The three cereals used – wheat, oat and rye – give the bread a truly rich and intense flavour. The use of a lot of water ensures a solid, but at the same time airy crumb. The result is delicious bread prepared along traditional methods, with respect for the pure.

Next to launching the Averbode bread La Lorraine later will also construct a bakery in one of the abbey buildings. This way, the art of baking bread will also be extended on site.

Offer

Averbode abbey bread is a wholegrain bread of 600g.

03. The cheese
03. The cheese

From times immemorial dairy products – including cheese – have been a basic element in the everyday menu of the abbey community. Hence, it does not come as a surprise that the Averbode Abbey has decided to also integrate abbey cheese in the basket of products that are being launched under the brand name Averbode. For the production of this abbey cheese the Abbey decided to collaborate with the Belgian dairy cooperative association Milcobel, consisting out of 3000 member – dairy farmers whose milk are jointly being processed and marketed.

Both parties have common ground: working together is a basic principle, typical for a cooperative association and an abbey. The Abbey’s dairy farm will also join the dairy cooperative association Milcobel and this way pays a sustainable contribution to the creation of Averbode abbey cheese.

Moreover, abbey cheeses are part of the Belgian culinary heritage, where tradition and authenticy are key. These values, which are strongly embedded in the abbey community, are central in the entire development process of the Averbode abbey cheese. Milcobel ensures a cheese production that combines sustainability, tradition and innovation.

Offer: Averbode abbey cheese is a semi-hard, creamy specialty cheese with a vivid and intense taste and a rich character. The cheese will be available in various formats:

  • Rectangular cheese: +/- 2,7 kg
  • Mini wheel: +/- 900g
  • A prepacked block: +/- 250g

04. The beer
04. The beer

The Averbode Abbey appointed Brewery Huyghe as its partner to brew Averbode Abbey beer. Just like the Averbode Abbey has a rich and long tradition, the family brewery Huyghe also can look back on a glorious history, where tradition and authenticity are kept in high esteem. These values were also confirmed when Brewery Huyghe joined the Belgian Family Brewers.

But also in terms of sustainability both parties have a common ground: Brewery Huyghe is the only brewer in Belgium with a beer in its portfolio that is fair trade, gluten free and organic at the same time. Moreover, all recent investments at the brewery were aimed at bringing down the carbon footprint of the production process. And Brewery Huyghe also pays special attention to social employment: all carton boxes – used for export – are folded in a sheltered workshop. Respect for the neighbourhood, environment, society and sustainable use of raw materials are an integral part of the brewery’s business model.

The ‘new’ Averbode Abbey beer will be an homage and revaluation of history, as from the 14th until the 20th century there were brewing activities in the abbey and several brewages were made (Camerbier and Cleynbier). And although the brewery holds history in high esteem, the brewing installation on the other hand is state of the art and can be regarded as one of the most advanced in Belgium. Briefly, with the creation of the Averbode Abbey beer, tradition will meet top technology.

Offer

Averbode is a blonde abbey beer of 7.5% ABV, dry-hopped and with a second fermentation in the bottle.

A newcomer to the basket of abbey products

With the new “Experience Centre Averbodia” being under construction, the Abbey of Averbode took the time to go looking for a nutritious and healthy sweet food to complement its existing basket of abbey products : bread, cheese and beer. The choice fell on an artisanal honey cake, a tasty soft gingerbread with walnuts which pairs beautifully with the current abbey products.

Gingerbread: a long living tradition

Gingerbread is the new flavour of Averbode Abbey. This is not surprising, since this specialty has traditionally always been on the menu in refectories. In the Middle Ages pilgrims brought spiced cakes from the East and the monasteries were the first to get to work with them. After all, they had all the ingredients within hands to bake gingerbread: grains, honey, spices. The foundation of a centuries-old tradition was laid.

When Averbode Abbey decided to add gingerbread to their basket of abbey products, they immediately turned to Vondelmolen. The gingerbread of this family business has been on the menu of the friars for many years. Moreover, Vondelmolen also has a fascinating and rich history, dating back to 1867. Today, Vondelmolen is number 1 in Belgium and a top 5 player in Europe, within its market.

Shared values, wonderful moments

The balance between their values is what makes the cooperation between Averbode Abbey and Vondelmolen so harmonious. For example, Vondelmolen stands for authenticity and taste, which matches perfectly with pure and tasteful, the values of the Averbode Abbey products. In addition, Vondelmolen produces artisanal delicacies for every moment, perfectly in line with the values of Averbode Abbey, artisanal and quality. Both partners also adopt a sustainable approach.

Gingerbread has all the qualities to be 'one with the moment’, to complete the atmosphere of the basket of Averbode Abbey products. This delicacy enriches also many moments of the day, such as breakfast, snack or dessert. Furthermore, gingerbread is also very versatile: it is not just a responsible indulgence, but it also gives energy to work and sport. In short, tasty and nutritious, easy and healthy.

The character of the Averbode Abbey Gingerbread

In France, the gingerbread of Cîteaux abbey in Burgundy is an appreciated abbey cake. The Averbode Abbey gingerbread is unique in the Lowlands: because of the taste - the authentic combination of honey and nuts -, and because of the appearance - the traditional baking process, manual hot cutting and decoration with nuts -.

Averbode gingerbread is available in an artisanal block shape, unsliced and weighs 400g.

Discover the traditional flavour

Discover the Averbode Abbey Gingerbread in the abbey shop, and soon at Delhaize, and be surprised by the authentic combination of honey and nuts.

Combine this delicacy with the abbey cheese and beer for a traditional flavour. But above all, enjoy and “become one with the moment”.

Experience centre

Next to launching a basket with Averbode products, the Abbey also plans to create a hospitable experience centre on its premises, where old crafts will revive. Old buildings will be restored and will house a microbrewery, a cheese maturation room, a bakery, a meeting centre and an abbey shop. These entities as a whole might evolve into an appealing educational tourist experience centre, at the West Gate of the Abbey. This experience centre will only strengthen and broaden the new ‘calling’ of Averbode as the gate to the wider Merode area. At the same time, the Abbey will remain an oasis of silence, contemplation, prayer and reflection.
